چکیده

Background Prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease is important to ensure both informed parental counselling before birth, and effective planning of potentially life-saving interventions after birth. MRI offers a safe, radiationfree adjunct to conventional diagnostic modalities, particularly in mothers with high BMI or at later gestations where ultrasound may be limited. However, cardiovascular imaging in the fetus presents several challenges, not least due to the small size and constant motion of the fetal heart, the lack of external cardiac gating, and gross fetal and maternal motion. We present our initial experience of 20 fetal cardiac MRI cases, each referred following fetal echocardiographic assessment to resolve specific points of diagnostic uncertainty.

Methods for prenatal assessment of fetal cardiac function.

Fetal cardiac function is increasingly recognized as a marker of disease severity and prognosis in selected fetal conditions. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used in experimental (animal) fetal cardiology but the lack of a noninvasive fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) to trigger image acquisition remains a major limiting factor precluding its application in humans. Fetal medicine speciali...

MR imaging of fetal cardiac malposition and congenital cardiovascular anomalies on the four-chamber view

Fetal echocardiography is the method of choice to visualize the fetal congenital cardiovascular anomalies. However, there are some disadvantages. Fetal cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has the potential to complement ultrasound in detecting congenital cardiovascular anomalies. This pictorial review draws on our experience about fetal cardiac MRI; it describes the four-chamber view on fe...

MRI of the fetal heart: comparison of the obstetric sonography and fetal magnetic resonance imaging findings

Background Intra uterine diagnosis of cardiac malformations is very important because they are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Despite advances in sonographic equipment, fetal position, maternal obesity, maternal abdominal wall scar from previous surgery and olygohydramnios, can impair significantely the visualization of fetal cardiac structures. The intent of this study was to ev...

Fetal magnetic resonance imaging at 3.0 T.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used to image the in utero fetus for the past 3 decades. Although not as commonplace as other patient-oriented MRI, it is a growing field and demonstrating a role in the clinical care of the fetus. Indeed, the body of literature involving fetal MRI exceeds 3000 published articles. Indeed, there is interest in accessing even the healthy fetus with MRI to...
